Mike Matthews

Biography

Michael "Mike" Matthews (Earth Ethics Institute at Miami Dade College,  IEEE Planet Positive 2030 Communities Committee) is an environmental educator dedicated to advancing Earth Literacy and strengthening the relationship between human societies and the natural world. He holds an M.S. in Environmental Studies from Florida International University, where his research examined the effectiveness of experiential teaching methods in environmental education.
Mike’s academic background includes deep ecology, environmental ethics, South Florida ecology, environmental policy, and sustainable development. He has served as a visiting instructor at Florida Gulf Coast University—teaching Environmental Biology, Global Environment and Society, Deep Ecology, and the University Colloquium—and has also taught for Florida International University and Johnson & Wales University. Earlier in his career, Mike worked as a naturalist at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center.
He currently serves as Collegewide Director of the Earth Ethics Institute at Miami Dade College, where he leads programming that fosters Earth Literacy across all eight campuses, including Global Sustainability and Earth Literacy Studies (GSELS), changemaking initiatives, and interdisciplinary sustainability education. 
Mike also serves as Co‑Chair of the IEEE Planet Positive 2030 Communities Committee, part of the IEEE Planet Positive 2030 Initiative, a global, multidisciplinary effort working to develop sustainable technology solutions that reduce environmental impact, increase ecological resilience, and support a flourishing future for people and planet.
